Sierra Mar — Menu Guide
By Firoz Khan · FK Digital Media
Perched on the cliffs above the Pacific along Highway 1, Sierra Mar is the dining room of Post Ranch Inn — a destination restaurant where the meal is the point of the trip, not an add-on to it. Executive chef Il Hoon Kang serves one prix-fixe tasting menu at dinner and a family-style feast at lunch, both built around organic, seasonal Californian cooking. There is no à la carte menu, so this guide covers what the experience costs, how it works, and what the food is like — all written in our own words, with prices reported from official sources rather than copied from a menu.

How the meal works
Sierra Mar does not publish an à la carte menu — there are no individual dish prices to list, because you don't order off a menu here. Lunch is a family-style experience reported at $85 per person, served daily from 12 to 3 PM. Dinner is a seasonal tasting menu reported at $185 per person, served daily from 5:30 to 9 PM. A supplemental sustainable caviar service is offered for an additional reported $220. The lineup shifts with the seasons, so even the structure of the tasting changes over the year.
Advance reservations are required and are bookable on OpenTable; the room is in high demand, so don't count on walking in. Note for non-hotel guests: the inn's gatehouse admits dining guests at most 30 minutes before their reservation, so plan your arrival along Highway 1 accordingly.
What the food is like
The cooking is organic, Californian, and relentlessly seasonal — the menu is built around what's ripe in Big Sur and Monterey County right now rather than around signature dishes that stay put year to year. The kitchen describes its approach as a dialogue of balance: between land and sea, richness and restraint, with sustainability as a constant rather than a theme. Expect the meal to move from the garden to the coast and back — vegetables treated with the same seriousness as the fish.
The supply chain is part of the story: the restaurant works with local partners including Ad Astra Bread Co., The Cheese Shop in Carmel, Brokaw Farms in Soledad, and Monterey Abalone — growers and producers from the same coastline the dining room overlooks. The whole point is that the meal could only come from here.
The wine program
Sierra Mar's cellar is one of the most decorated on the California coast. It holds the Wine Spectator Grand Award — the only one in Monterey County — with a reported 3,200+ selections drawn from a 12,000-bottle cellar. If you're serious about wine, this is as much a draw as the food: the list runs deep into coastal California and well beyond it. Ask the sommelier to pair with the tasting — that's the room's natural strength.
Recognition — one honest note
Sierra Mar holds a Michelin Green Star, and we want to be precise about what that is: the Green Star is Michelin's award for environmental and sustainability practices, not a culinary star. Press coverage in July 2026 was explicit that the restaurant has not received a Michelin culinary star — the Green Star honors how the kitchen sources, farms, and operates. Separately, it was named Best Restaurant in Big Sur 2025 in the Monterey County Weekly readers' poll.
What we'd order
There's only one decision tree here, so think of it as how we'd play the visit rather than what we'd pick off a menu:
- Do dinner, not lunch, if you can only go once. The evening tasting is the full expression of the kitchen — the family-style lunch is excellent, but dinner is the reason the room has its reputation.
- Add the caviar service. At a reported $220 supplement on a $185 tasting, it's a serious splurge — but the kitchen's sustainability ethos makes its caviar sourcing genuinely interesting, not just luxurious.
- Let the sommelier drive. A 3,200-selection Grand Award list is not meant to be navigated alone. Hand the pairing over and tell them what you like.
- Book for the light. A 5:30 PM seating in summer puts you over the Pacific at golden hour — the view is part of the menu.
Planning your visit
- Book well ahead. Dinner reservations are required and the room fills — OpenTable shows it booking dozens of times a day.
- Time the drive. Non-hotel guests are admitted at the gatehouse a maximum of 30 minutes before the reservation; Highway 1 is slow and beautiful, so give yourself more time than the map says.
- Budget honestly: $185 per person for the tasting plus the wine program means a comfortable dinner for two lands well above $500 before tip — with the caviar supplement, well above $900.
- Dress code is smart casual, and valet parking is available.
